Penguins fire head coach Mike Johnston

The Penguins have fired coach Mike Johnston today.

He will be replaced by Mike Sullivan, who had been coaching their farm team in Wilkes-Barre and will make his debut when Washington visits Consol Energy Center Monday at 7:08 p.m.

Assistant coach Gary Agnew also was fired.

Assistant coaches Rick Tocchet and Jacques Martin and goalie coach Mike Bales will remain on the staff.

“I felt it was time for a coaching change because our team has underachieved,” general manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. “Our expectations are much higher with this group of players.
