Penguins cut camp roster, opt for Jarry as backup goalie

The Penguins assigned 17 players to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Monday, trimming their training camp roster to 31 players 10 days before the regular-season opener.

Among those reassigned were goalies Leland Irving and Casey DeSmith, which effectively ensures that Tristan Jarry will begin the season in the NHL as Marc-Andre Fleury’s backup while Matt Murray recovers from a broken hand.

Jarry, 21, has played in two preseason games for the Penguins, both shutout wins against Chicago and Columbus. He has stopped all 54 shots he has faced so far in the preseason.

Beyond Irving and DeSmith, the full list of players reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton includes: defensemen Tim Erixon, Ethan Prow, Stuart Percy, Cameron Gaunce, Reid McNeill, Steve Oleksy and Chad Ruhwedel; and forwards Oskar Sundqvist, Adam Krause, Ryan Haggerty, Sahir Gill, Josh Archibald, Dominik Simon, Garrett Wilson and Jean-Sebastien Dea.
