On this date in Penguins history: Paying tribute to the late ‘Badger’ Bob Johnson

On this date, 29 years ago, the Penguins held a touching and emotional tribute to the late coach who helped bring the first Stanley Cup win to the city of Pittsburgh in the 1990-91 season.

Before facing the New Jersey Devils at the Civic Arena on November 27, 1991, a 10-minute candlelight ceremony was held in honor of the late ‘Badger’ Bob Johnson.

In addition the pre-game ceremony, Johnson’s signature phrase ‘A great day for hockey’ would be painted on the ice at the Igloo.

Johnson had passed away in Colorado the prior day after a battle with brain cancer.
