Goaltending coach Bales leaves Pittsburgh for same gig in Carolina

It’s not just a goaltender the Penguins are losing.

That position coach is leaving, too.

Mike Bales, who was the Penguins goaltending coach for the past four seasons, accepted the same position with Carolina, the Hurricanes announced on Saturday afternoon.

Bales had largely been responsible for Marc-Andre Fleury’s career renaissance. Along with goaltending development coach Mike Buckley, Bales has also had a hand in the development of Matt Murray.

With no trades before Saturday’s 3 p.m. roster freeze, it’s widely assumed Fleury will be headed to the Vegas Golden Knights in next week’s expansion draft.
