This Week in Phoenix Suns’ History: Thunder Dan Traded For Hot Rod

October 7, 1995 – Suns trade Dan Majerle, Antonio Lang, and a 1997 1st round pick to Cleveland for John “Hot Rod” Williams. – One of the most famous trades in Phoenix Suns history, General Manager Bryan Colangelo traded longtime fan favorite swingman “Thunder” Dan Majerle for John “Hot Rod” Williams.

Hot Rod, Cleveland’s starting center, was once the highest paid player in the NBA, but at the time of the trade was suffering from back spasms due to an automobile accident that occurred the year prior.

The selection of Dan Majerle in the 1988 NBA Draft was famously booed by Suns fans, though he grew to become a huge fan favorite over his Suns career.
