Before a best trade (Charles Barkley in 1992) and a free agent signing (Steve Nash in 2004) in franchise history, the title of "best Suns team ever" was complicated.
The 1975-76 crew punched the franchise's first-ever Finals ticket was, by every admission, a Cinderella occurrence. Their regular season record was 40-42. Not poor, but not elite, either. They peaked at the right time and rode that momentum as far as they could.
It was the 1980-81 edition that seemed to hold the most promise. Riding a balanced attack led by Walter Davis, Truck Robinson, Dennis Johnson and Alvan Adams, the Suns set a new franchise record with 57 wins.
