Back when we could go out freely to bars, movies and restaurants, Damian Lillard was hanging out in a dusty high school gym in Phoenix.
The All-NBA Trail Blazers guard was in town to play the Suns and could have been in Scottsdale, living it up. Instead, he was having a chat with Phil Beckner, a skills coach he’s known since their days together at Weber State. Lillard was a surprise guest at a free basketball clinic at Sunnyslope High. There were fewer than 100 coaches in the bleachers, a half dozen or so players on the sidelines and not a single TV, newspaper or website camera crew in sight.
