The Suns had just won for the first time in six games, beating the Dallas Mavericks 102-88 on Wednesday at Talking Stick Resort Arena, but the mood in the Phoenix locker room was muted.
Instead of celebrating, the Suns were lamenting the gruesome left ankle injury suffered by teammate Isaiah Canaan late in the first quarter. As Canaan was going up for a driving layup, he collided with Dallas’ Wesley Matthews and his ankle bore the brunt of his fall.
Matthews immediately buried his face in his hands as he saw Canaan on the ground, his ankle pointing in the wrong direction.
