Phoenix Suns Considering Firing Head Coach Jeff Hornacek

The Phoenix Suns are considering firing head coach Jeff Hornacek after a current 5-15 slump has dropped them to 12-20 on the season, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Suns have been forced to contemplate a coaching change far sooner than they hoped to because of a slide that has dropped them to 12-20 and 11th in the Western Conference, with fears growing within the organization that the team is no longer responding to Hornacek.

The lowest point of the season came last night when they lost 111-104 to the Philadelphia 76ers, who picked up just their second win of the year. Hornacek conceded that the loss was the worst of the year, saying the team's "confidence is lacking" after the game.

Hornacek took over as Phoenix's head coach in 2013, and he surprisingly turned them into a playoff contender in his first season. The Suns ultimately missed out on the postseason that year and finished 10th in the Western Conference with a 39-43 record last year. However, the offseason signing of star center Tyson Chandler was thought to give them the boost they needed to get over the hump and into the postseason this season.

This is the final guaranteed year of the four-year deal he signed with the Suns in 2013, and there was plenty of speculation about his future after Phoenix failed to pick up his fourth-year option prior to the start of this season.

The Suns close out their four-game homestand Monday agains the Cleveland Cavaliers before starting a four-game road trip.
