In May, more than 200 female hockey players announced they would be staying out of any professional league in North America until "they got the resources that professional hockey demands and deserves."
Big-name Olympians such as Hilary Knight and Shannon Szabados wielded the leverage of scores of less-established players backing their pledge.
These players joined the movement knowing that turning down the National Women's Hockey League meant there was a chance they would never play professional hockey again. One player who made that risky sacrifice was Scottsdale's Katie McGovern.
