Nearly a year ago, Xavier Gutierrez and employees of the Arizona Coyotes visited the Chicanos Por La Causa Community Center in west Phoenix. The team held a street hockey clinic for kids who were taking online classes there with schools forced to adapt to the pandemic.
It was a noteworthy appearance in that the Coyotes were just beginning to ramp up their outreach to diverse communities and use their platform to celebrate diversity in the Valley, and some of the things the team has done since then are firsts for the organization.
That was Hispanic Heritage Month 2020.
