The rangy teenager spent last season putting in time with Bethlehem Steel, building his game intelligence and learning how to respond to the myriad situations professional defenders face. Preventing goals, after all, is only one job of the modern central defender. Philadelphia Union build out of the back, and that requires center backs to be comfortable under pressure, smart and consistent with their passing, and in possession of a short memory.
