From a purely offensive standpoint, CJ Sapong was the most important player for the Union in 2017.

Sapong scored 16 goals, which set a career high and the Union's single-season goal record. He tied his career-high with five assists. Sapong scored 32 percent of the Union's goals, and were involved in 42 percent of their goals. His hold up play was also exceptional, as he suffered 87 fouls this season, a career-high and record for the Union.

Throughout the season, Sapong also set career milestones. He scored his first career hat-trick when he potted three goals against New York Red Bulls, giving the Union their first win of the season.
