Sapong succeeding on pitch despite heavy contact from defenders

Saturday afternoon’s match between Philadelphia Union and Montreal Impact featured some tackles that would make NFL linebackers jealous.

In total, 24 fouls were called – 11 on Philadelphia and 13 on Montreal – and four yellow cards were issued during the contest. More than half of Montreal’s fouls were absorbed by Union forward CJ Sapong.

During the match, Sapong suffered seven fouls, which tied the franchise mark that is held by Eric Ayuk and Tranquillo Barnetta.

To put that number into perspective, Fabinho is second on the team in fouls suffered this season, with eight. The amount of fouls that Chris Pontius, Alejandro Bedoya and Ilsinho have collectively suffered this year totals the 15 that Sapong has drawn individually.
