Entering the match, Chris Pontius had yet to score a goal for the Union in 2017. When the final whistle sounded, there was a "2" in the goal column.

Pontius opened his account in the 10th minute, when Keegan Rosenberry sent in a pass from just outside the box. Pontius redirected his pass with a header, beating Fire keeper Matt Lampson and giving the Union a 1-0 lead.

In the 56th minute, doubled the lead and his goal total. Fafa Picault ripped a shot, which was saved by Lampson. But Pontius slipped past the Fire defense and slammed home the juicy rebound, registering his second brace in a Union kit and seventh of his career.
