WASHINGTON - It was a bittersweet homecoming for Union midfielder Chris Pontius. After spending his first seven Major League Soccer seasons with D.C. United, Pontius made his first trip back to his former home and it was so close to being a smashing success.
While Pontius earned individual distinction by scoring a goal, he and his teammates felt deflated after letting three points slip away in second half stoppage time.
A goal by Steve Birnbaum in the 94th minute gave D.C. United a 2-2 draw with the Union on Saturday at RFK Stadium.
Pontius' goal, off a spectacular feed from Ilsinho, gave the Union a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute.
