Philadelphia Union shift focus back to Champions League in first meeting with Atlanta United since 2019

After not playing Atlanta United at all in 2020, the Philadelphia Union are back at Mercedes Benz Stadium tonight with a chance to avenge a 2-0 loss there that ended their 2019 season.

The two teams went in opposite directions after their meeting that fall with the Union capturing a Supporters’ Shield after finishing 25 points clear of Atlanta in the Eastern Conference standings.

While in other leagues around the world Atlanta’s record would’ve put them in danger of relegation, the Five Stripes earned the U.S. Open Cup bid into Concacaf Champions League as the most recent winners after the competition was scrapped last year.
