Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Matt Freese signs contract extension

On the eve of what will hopefully be a successful Olympic qualifying tournament, Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Matt Freese has signed a contract extension through 2022 with club options for 2023 and 2024.

“Matt has proven to be a valuable member of our goalkeeper unit and the team as a whole,” Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner said in a news release. “Matt has demonstrated time and again he is ready whenever he is called upon and has been vital in some of the team’s most important games.”

The 22-year-old has made seven first team appearances since signing out of Harvard University in 2018, none bigger than his clean sheet in the last game of the regular season in 2020 when they clinched the Supporters’ Shield.
