It was thought of as a must-win game, and the Philadelphia Union did not win, being soundly beaten by the Portland Timbers 3-1.
In the 26th minute, Richie Marquez got the Union on the board off of a Haris Medunjanin corner kick. The lead was short lived however, as Darlington Nagbe got the equalizer in the 32nd minute. Roy Miller gave the Timbers a lead they would not relinquish in the 65th minute with a flick-on header off of a free kick.
The Union were perhaps fortunate not to have conceded more, as there were several shots from the Timbers that went well wide or forced Andre Blake to step up and make a save.
