In a wide ranging press conference on Wednesday afternoon, new Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner described what he has seen in his first few months in Philadelphia, how he wants the team and club to grow, and what he thinks of the job head coach Jim Curtin has done this season.

A strong base on which to build

“The base here is good,” Tanner began. “Sometimes you need to turn everything, but that will not be the case here.”

Since the Union announced that Tanner would be joining the club, they played in the 2018 US Open Cup final and lost to Houston, broken Seattle Sounders’ nine match winning streak, defeated Sporting Kansas City with Jay Simpson leading the line, and whupped Minnesota United to secure a playoff spot.
