Zack Wheeler diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, out for season

PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies will be without Zack Wheeler for the remainder of the season.

Wheeler was diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome. The recommendation is for Wheeler to undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery in the coming weeks. The general recovery timeline, according to the Phillies, is six to eight months.

The Phillies right-hander was placed on the injured list on Aug. 16 with a right upper extremity blood clot. He had surgery to remove the clot on Monday, Aug 18. After spending the week consulting with multiple experts, the consensus was for Wheeler to undergo surgery.
