Why Zack Wheeler won’t pitch in the All-Star Game

SAN DIEGO – Phillies starter Zack Wheeler will not be participating in this year’s All-Star Game in his hometown of Atlanta.

Wheeler is not dealing with an injury. He will make his final start of the first half on Saturday against the Padres in San Diego. Instead, he will prioritize rest and preparation for the second half.

“He came to me the other day and he basically said that he wanted to make sure his body was in good shape coming out of the break,” manager Rob Thomson said.

Wheeler is at 116 innings through 18 starts with one more to go before the break.
