The 2025 Phillies have an estimated $310 million luxury tax payroll, the fourth-highest in the sport, according to FanGraphs.
They are operating above the $301 million fourth luxury tax threshold. Every dollar spent will be taxed at 110%. Whether or not the Phillies are willing to stretch those bills even further will determine a lot about the team’s trade deadline plans.
Take it as an encouraging sign that the Phillies were the highest bidder for reliever David Robertson. His one-year deal for a prorated $16 million will pay him around $6 million, but the actual cost is around $12 million with the taxes.
