With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, the Phillies had a golden opportunity to retake the lead against the Pirates. Alec Bohm hit an opposite-field double on a high fastball against starter Andrew Heaney. With the count 2-0, the left-hander Heaney, who cruised through six innings against the Phillies lineup, was lifted from the game with an apparent injury following a wild pitch. Bohm advanced to third on the play.

In came rookie right-hander Isaac Mattson with a tall task: Keep the Phillies off the board with a runner at third and nobody out while already being down in the count 2-0.
