SAN DIEGO – Manager Rob Thomson came out of the dugout in the bottom of the seventh inning for a pitching change. Ranger Suarez rarely shows emotion, but he was visibly upset. He paced around the mound before handing the ball to his manager. He fell one out short of finishing seven innings for the seventh time this season. He has more starts of at least seven innings than the team with the best record in the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Phillies once again got what they needed out of Suarez, but couldn’t come up with enough timely hits in a 4-2 loss to the Padres in San Diego.
