Thome hit 612 home runs in a 22-year career. He signed a six-year, $85 million contract to join the Phillies before the 2003 season, signaling the Phillies were ready to win again. They nearly made the 2003 postseason, but did not come close in '04. Thome then missed the second half of the '05 season due to injuries. Then-general manager Pat Gillick traded him to the White Sox that offseason to make room for Ryan Howard. Thome returned briefly in '12 before being dealt to the Orioles.
