Phillies nearly pull off spring training no-hitter

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Phillies lost their bid for a spring training no-hitter with one out in Thursday's ninth inning as they tied Baltimore, 2-2, at Ed Smith Stadium.

Vince Velasquez, Jake Thompson, Colton Murray, and Michael Mariot combined to not allow a hit through 81/3 innings. Mariot then yielded a single and a game-tying homer to Germantown Academy product Sean Coyle.

It would have been the team's first spring no-no since 1952.

Velasquez walked four batters but did not allow a hit in his 32/3 innings. Thompson, who pitched for the first time this spring, struck out two in 21/1 perfect innings.
