PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies returned to Citizens Bank Park on Monday without the presence of their ace in the clubhouse.
Right-hander Zack Wheeler, who was diagnosed with a blood clot near his right shoulder over the weekend, underwent a procedure to remove the blockage on Monday morning, the organization announced. A successful thrombolysis was performed by Dr. Paul DiMuzio at Philadelphia’s Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a huge positive for Wheeler and his health.
But a timeline to return is not yet determined, so it’s not clear when — or if — Wheeler will pitch again this season as he deals with the medical issue.
