The Phillies, who have lost 11 of 12, designated struggling outfielder Michael Saunders and reliever Jeanmar Gomez for assignment on Tuesday and promoted outfielder Cameron Perkins and left-handed reliever Hoby Milner from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The team signed Saunders, an all-star in 2016, as a free agent in January, but Saunders hit just .205 with a .617 OPS in 61 games and saw his playing time decrease steadily. He’s due $8 million this year. Gomez, who is making $4.2 million, pitched in 18 games with a 7.25 ERA, the worst of his career.
