On Sunday, the Phillies enjoyed a spectacular debut from a former number one draft pick named Mick. This week, they’ll face a former number one (overall!) draft pick named Mickey. And while it’s too early to declare Mick Abel a success, there is plenty of evidence that Mickey Moniak is never going to live up to his lofty draft status.
The Phillies held the top draft pick in the 2016 amateur draft, but there were no standout prospects like Bryce Harper or Paul Skenes at the top of that year’s class. Instead, the Phillies had to choose from an assortment of lesser hyped players and ultimately settled on a high school outfielder from California named Mickey Moniak.
