The Pittsburgh Pirates have had a rough decade or three. They haven’t won their division since 1992 and only have three playoff appearances in that span. One of the main reasons for that ineptitude is that the Pirates function as one of the smallest market teams in the majors. They almost never spend big money on free agents, and every time they get a young star, there’s almost immediate speculation as to what team he’ll be traded to in a few years. (Looking at you, Paul Skenes!)
