MLB draft: Phillies take high-upside swing on high-school pitcher who fell

Phillies assistant general manager and head of amateur scouting Brian Barber has been doing this long enough to know that anyone can fall in Major League Baseball’s amateur draft. Still, some surprises pop up once in a while.

The latest was right-hander Matthew Fisher, the 46th-ranked MLB Pipeline prospect in this year’s draft class who dropped to the seventh round on Monday. The Phillies scooped up the high schooler with the No. 221 pick.

“You never know what’s going to happen in a draft with specific players,” Barber said via Zoom. “Obviously, you have certain ideas what might happen.
