Chris Young replaces Rick Kranitz as Phillies pitching coach

Young, whose promotion was first reported by The Athletic, joined the Phillies last season after spending three seasons in the scouting department of the Houston Astros. He was previously a scout with the Padres after playing seven seasons in the minors. His playing career ended in 2008 with the Camden Riversharks.

Young, 37, brought an analytical mindset to the pitching staff that seemed to jive with manager Gabe Kapler. Young also oversaw the defensive positioning of the outfielders during games. Kapler said in September that his entire coaching staff would return in 2019. But that changed this winter once two other teams started zeroing in on Young as a potential pitching coach.
