As Phillies’ lineup flounders, big questions loom | David Murphy

Baseball is a weird sport, and a lot of weirder things have happened than a team overcoming a 5½ game deficit with 19 to play. But when you watch a team like the Phillies in a situation like they faced on Tuesday afternoon, it's difficult to conclude that they are anything other than a team that has been leaking oil for a month and is now in the final stages of burning off whatever is left of their engine.

They do not quit, and you can certainly give them that. After falling behind 3-0 in the opening game of a must-win doubleheader against the Nationals, they brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings.
