I don’t need to tell any Philadelphia Flyers fans how weak the team was defensively this past season. They surrendered the third-most total Goals-Against among NHL teams with 280 in 82 games, had the sixth-lowest penalty kill percentage, and tied for the tenth most Penalties in Minutes per game. Fletcher saw these weaknesses and quickly addressed them in the offseason by acquiring Matt Niskanen and Justin Braun in separate trades. Both, especially Braun, have been solid in the defensive zone throughout their careers but it remains to be seen if that can continue with the Flyers.
