Eagles' OC Pat Shurmur says RBs Murray, Mathews will 'share the role'

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said that the team plans to use a running back by committee approach to their backfield, splitting the carries between running backs DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews.

Murray signed a five-year, $40-million contract and Mathews signed a three-year, $11-million deal in the 2015 offseason, despite the fact both were featured rushers with their old teams.

"They’re two really fine players," Shurmur said, via the Delaware County Daily Times.

"They’re two guys that have been starters in places that they’ve been and they’re going to come here and kind of share the role.
