Watch: Sergio Rodriguez, the Sixers' new stopgap point guard

After the drafting of Ben Simmons, it has been all about improvement-by-increment for new Sixers general manager Bryan Colangelo. Take Sergio Rodriguez.

The plan is to sign Rodriguez, who has spent the last five seasons playing for Real Madrid. He is 30 years old, has previous NBA experience in Portland, Sacramento and New York, and qualifies as a grown-up on a team full of kids. It is a one-year deal, so there is no significant commitment. But as the Sixers try to get Simmons comfortable with handling the ball in the NBA — handling it more than a typical guy who guards 4’s for a living — it is the kind of move that just makes sense for a developing team: no wow, just a nod of understanding.
