This past season, the starting shooting guard position was manned primarily by Markelle Fultz and then J.J. Redick after the Jimmy Butler trade. Starting Fultz allowed the Philadelphia 76ers to see what their former number one overall pick could do. It also allowed head coach Brett Brown to have a scoring option in Redick off the bench.
After the Butler deal, the Sixers needed more perimeter shooting in the starting five than Fultz could offer, thus Redick took over as the starter. Redick manned the position for the rest of the season, with Landry Shamet being his primary backup until the Sixers dealt the rookie as part of the package to acquire Tobias Harris.
