McConnell switches number so Henderson can honor father

T.J. McConnell will rock jersey No. 1 this season for the 76ers.

It’s not because the reserve point guard prefers that number over the No. 12 he wore last season. It’s because he decided to help teammate Gerald Henderson Jr.

Henderson signed with the Sixers as a free agent over the summer. His father, Gerald Henderson Sr., played for the franchise during the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons.

“I got a text from [Sixers equipment manager] Scott Rego, saying that Gerald’s dad wore 12 when he played here,” McConnell said. “He was asking, will I be willing to give up the number?
