Starting at top of chains, coaching links connect UR, W&M in Saturday's rivalry renewal

Russ Huesman was a graduate assistant at South Carolina in 1983 when he applied for his first full-time coaching position. William & Mary had a $6,000-a-year job supervising defensive ends.

The offer he received from Tribe coach Jimmye Laycock set Huesman on the path that led him to where he is now, winding down his first year as the University of Richmond’s head coach.

Huesman spent 13 seasons on Laycock’s staff (1984-97), going from defensive ends to defensive line, to the secondary, and then to defensive coordinator.

“They were great years,” Huesman said. “The one thing I can say about my time there with Coach Laycock, I loved working for him.
