Penn State NAACP sits in during pre-volleyball anthem

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Members of the Penn State’s NAACP chapter staged a sit-in during the national anthem before a volleyball match.

The students, who also wore black T-shirt and extended their fists Wednesday night, say they’re trying to call attention to what they perceive to be police brutality and racial discrimination in the wake of black men being shot by police in various parts of the country.

Senior Shanta Mills, who is a member of the group, says “There’s things happening that needs to have attention brought to them.” She feels such issues are not always well-receive at Penn State and in State College, where the university’s main campus is located.
