Trailing two sets to one in the season opener against No. 8 Ohio State, Penn State found itself just one point of forcing a decisive fifth set on the road.
But instead of closing out the fourth set, the Nittany Lions allowed the Buckeyes to rattle off three straight points to win the set and the match. The Nittany Lions lost to the Buckeyes 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 25-21, 26-24) and were unable to pick up a big win to start the 2019 season.
Penn State struggled to find any kind of momentum in the opening set and ultimately dropped the opening set 25-13.
