Jason Hehir, director of ESPN’s 'The Last Dance,' provides inside look into how it came to life

The final episode of the ESPN documentary “The Last Dance” premiered in May, but its importance to Penn State’s aspiring sports journalism students has never been greater.

Jason Hehir, the director of ESPN’s 10-part documentary series, talked over Zoom with John Affleck, the Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society at Penn State, about his role in producing the award-winning special about Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls’ championship season.

Over 100 Penn State journalism students joined the Zoom meeting to learn more about Hehir’s recently Emmy-awarded production.

“It was just a really, really gratifying moment,” Hehir said about learning “The Last Dance” had won the Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
