While helping Maryland win its third national championship in a row , Missy Doherty, a defender on the team, had maintained a sterling record in the classroom. Then she was known as Missy Holmes, three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll honoree, scholarship athlete and former president of her high school’s National Honor Society . She hadn’t planned on coaching lacrosse. She wanted to teach science.
Her Terrapin teams went 68-2 over her four years . And before each game, Doherty, the ever-dauntless scholar, would pick up the pen before her stick. Though she had the analytical mind for science, she also had a way with words.
