Dotson took the first offensive play of the game for the Nittany Lions 75 yards, with Lamont Wade scoring a touchdown on a 100-yard kickoff return to give Penn State its 14 points. Unfortunately, an untimely fumble from Sean Clifford gave Illinois a short field, while the defense gave little resistance during the first quarter, leading to an Illinois 21-14 lead by the end of the first 15 minutes.
