Does This Play Prove That Mike McQueary Gambled On Penn State Games?

Today, ESPN Magazine broke a story that strongly suggested that Sandusky scandal whistleblower (and former PSU quarterback) Mike McQueary gambled on Penn State games while he was a student-athlete. This play, one of the most notorious in PSU history, lends strong credibility to that claim.

In 1995, Penn State was beating Rutgers 52-34 with just 1:07 left on the clock. As Penn State drove downfield with time running out, Penn State did something very...out of character. Third-string quarterback Mike McQueary was in to run the clock down, but on 2nd and 7, he ran a play-action pass that ended up going for a touchdown.

Rutgers coaches weren't pleased. Joe Paterno, never a man to run up the score, turned to an assistant and asked "What happened?!". The postgame handshake even turned sour as the Rutgers coach and Paterno were both captured swearing on national TV.

The point spread? Penn State, -19.5.

With the allegations that surfaced today, it looks like we might finally have an explanation for one of the stranger on-field incidents in Nittany Lions history.
