The Stockton native in his 41st season at Stanford will retire following the 2017 season to end an era of excellence. Fittingly, Stanford is in the postseason hosting an NCAA regional this week. The Cardinal (40-14) opens against Sacramento State (32-27) at 6 p.m. today at Sunken Diamond.

The Stagg High graduate — nicknamed for the number on his jersey — has compiled more than 1,600 wins since taking over his college alma mater’s baseball program in 1977.
