Cal QB Davis Webb gives 'student of the game' new meaning

BERKELEY, Calif. -- There's a spiral notebook stored in the closet of Davis Webb's childhood room back in Texas. Its contents: the origins of the California quarterback's football education.

Each page contains play outlines. Some are trick plays like flea-flickers; others come from the garden variety of slants and out patterns. All the plays have this in common: Webb diagrammed them with meticulous detail, starting as a 12-year-old, as he flipped through channels watching college football games on Saturdays.

He'd then leave notes on his dad's nightstand. So when Matt Webb, a high school football coach, returned home from work Saturday, he'd have at least 30 new candidates for his team's playbook.
