William Byron wins Coke Zero Sugar 400; Jimmie Johnson misses playoffs

Leaving nothing to chance with a playoff spot on the line, William Byron picked the right time for his first win in NASCAR’s Cup Series.

The 22-year-old entered Saturday night’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway needing a strong finish during the regular-season finale to slip into the 16-driver, 10-spot playoff.

“This is incredible,” Byron said. “It’s been a hard couple of years in the Cup Series and trying to get my first win and gel with this team. These guys did an awesome job today and got us in the playoffs. It’s amazing, man.
