ORLANDO, Fla — Mana Iwabuchi provided a moment of pure genius in the first half of Japan’s match against Spain to open the SheBelieves Cup on Thursday at Exploria Stadium.
In the 44th minute, Iwabuchi latched onto a pass from teammate and right back Risa Shimizu and proceeded to slide and used her right foot to chip and send in a swooping ball past helpless Spanish goalkeeper Lola Gallardo. Gallardo had no chance to make a save as she was rooted to her spot.
Iwabuchi’s goal tied the contest at 1. Her goal brought a roar and an ovation from the fans at Exploria Stadium.
